Who is who?

It would be helpful if we could define the characters by assimilating them with figures in Chateaubriands works.

Suggestion:
Algonquin is alike Chactas in Atala and
Rene(e) is alike Rene in René by Chateaubriand

You are right. Algonquin is like Chactas in Atala, but Renee should be more like Chateaubriand himself, with the mentality of an emigre from the ancien regime, imbued with the brooding romanticism of Bretagne, (her father Chevalier Gregoire de Fronsac is Breton). Renee is Abelard to Algonquin's La Nouvelle Heloise. In fact, she disguises herself as a man and goes under the pseudonym Chevalier de Cherbourg.
